Graduation ceremonies for the Class of 2013 at Sussex Technical High School in Georgetown will take place on Thursday, May 30, rain or shine. The processional will begin at 6 p.m. and the ceremony will immediately follow. Guest speaker will be Virginia Forcucci, a Sussex Tech English teacher.

Family and friends are invited to the commencement ceremonies. If held outside in Raven Stadium, no tickets are necessary and access to the stadium begins at 4:30 p.m. Seating and disability accessibility are available on both sides of the field. Pictures and videotaping may be done along the fence in front of the bleachers. Spectators may not enter onto the field until after the conclusion of the ceremonies.

During graduation rehearsal on Wednesday, May 29, graduates will each receive three tickets for gymnasium admittance plus two run-over admittance tickets. Guests in the gymnasium are asked to please remain seated in the bleachers during the entire ceremony. The two run-over guests will be allowed to view the ceremonies via television in either the cafeteria or one of the classrooms in the 800 hall way. Handicap guests will be admitted in the school at 4:30 p.m. and the doors will open for all other ticket holders at 5 p.m.
Decision about the weather will be made by noon and notice will be placed on the school’s webpage at www.sussexvt.k12.de.us.

Sussex Tech Thespians “Grease” The Stage

“Grease” hit like lightning last weekend as Sussex Tech students performed the 1978 American musical on the stage of the Possum Point Players in Georgetown. Members of Tech Productions turned back the clock to the time of poodle skirts and leather jackets as they sang and danced their way into the hearts of the audience.
Perhaps the first hint of theatrical prowess was the obvious “N-e-u-w Y-o-u-r-ker” accent adopted by the actors. A Sussex County twang just wouldn’t have had the same affect for this musical classic. Every spoken word from the mouths of the Pink Ladies to the mouths of the leather jacket T-Birds took the audience from Sussex Tech High to Rydell High.
Lead male character bad-boy Danny (Cameron Malone) impressed the audience when he showed off some fancy John Travolta footsteps with fancy feet Cha-Cha DiGregorio (Summer Okoye) to win a dance-off. When good girl “Sandra Dee stereotype” lead female character Sandy (Kara Bethke) “turns bad” and walks onto the stage in a skin-hugging black leather outfit that made her legs look six feet long, more than a few 70’s generation audience members did a double-take as they thought Olivia Newton-John had reappeared.
Jivy Jess Bishop had more energy as Patty than a cat on a hot tin roof, and the comedic antics between Jan (Peyton Carter) and Roger (Kyle Attkinson-Steele) lit up the laughter meter during their “mooning” flirtation. The soothing mellow tone of Frankie Avalon came out in the voice of Isaac Van Curen as he sang “Teen Angel” to a distraught Frenchy (Hannah Powers) with pink hair, and Betty Rizzo (Lydia August) showed that she had a secret.
The only thing missing in the production was a re-creation of the street race that Kenicke (Ryan Barwick) brings to the audience’s minds as he looks them in the eyes and belts out his rendition of “Greased Lightning.”
And we cannot forget the off-camera voice of radio personality Vince Fontaine who turns out to be Sussex Tech’s own charismatic English teacher Anthony Natoli who enthusiastically brought the “teen idol” to life.
So many more Sussex Tech students took on the roles of supporting cast and crew to bring the Rydell High story to life. Each gave their time, energy, and talent either on stage or behind the scenes to make the production a total success. Hats off to Rydell High and Tech Productions!

Hello Sussex Tech Family and Friends,
The school year is almost over. This last month is full of banquets, awards ceremonies, and the traditional graduation activities. The year has flown by. Our students continue to amaze me with their accomplishments. Again this month, many Sussex Tech Ravens have earned special note.
Congratulations to senior Brinleigh Parsons who received the Young Water Fowler of the Year Award from the Eastern Sussex Chapter of Ducks Unlimited. Brin was honored for her work in developing the first high school chapter of Ducks Unlimited in the East here at Sussex Tech.
During spring break, several student members of the Sussex Tech Junior Chapter of Ducks Unlimited attended a Greenwing event near Greenwood. The event was designed to show young people the wonders of responsible conservation, shooting sports, and responsible gun use. Attending were Christopher Clifton, Brin Parsons, Brandon Jackson, Adam Harkness, and Zach Pulcinella. Advisors David Waters and Scott Layfield accompanied the students.
Congratulations to junior Bansri Patel who won a first place medal at the Sussex County Science Fair and who also won the Delaware Valley Science Fair in Pennsylvania, thereby qualifying as a finalist at the Delaware BioGENEius Challenge. She then qualified as a finalist in the upcoming National BioGENEius Challenge in Washington, D.C.
Congratulations to the JROTC Raven Battalion for winning the Delaware State Championship in Unarmed Exhibition Drill competition at the Eagle Classic sponsored by the Dover Air Force Base. The Unarmed Exhibition cadets went through a series of choreographed steps and turns in precision movement. They beat out eight other school teams. Led by Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Kaycee Bean, Raven team members are cadets Emma Rider, Branagh James, Alex Hassman, Joseph Hartman, Colin Hearn, Robert Christensen, Samantha Hawkins, and Spencer Turner.
Later the same day, the JROTC held its annual Change of Command Ceremony and Dinner at the Georgetown CHEER Center. Cadet Colonel Dylan Varrato passed over the Battalion flag to its new leader, Cadet Lieutenant Colonel Kaycee Bean. C/LTC Bean also received the service and commitment award presented by the Daughters of the American Revolution from Mrs. Donna Horvath. Other special service awards went to: C/MAJ Tyler Wood, Reserve Officers Association; C/CPT Ivy Colburn, Daughters of 1812; C/MAJ Andrew Atkins, Military Order of the Purple Heart; and C/LTC John Crimmins, Military Order of World Wars. Dozens of service bars were presented to other cadets. The Battalion has grown to almost 140 cadets and is the largest Battalion in Sussex County. The cadets are very active in Raider Challenge competitions and Drill Team competitions, as well as serving the community. This is a group of very fine young men and women who represent Sussex Tech well.
Congratulations to the 32 seniors in the Legal Support Services and Criminal Justice Technologies became the first class to receive Emergency Telecommunicator Certification. Curriculum in this technical area was revamped this year to include instruction on 9-1-1 simulators. After passing the exam given by the National Academy of Emergency Dispatchers, students qualify for jobs as a 9-1-1 operator.
Congratulations to Business, Finance, and Marketing seniors Devin Deloach and Jenna Stevens, junior Tyler Butler, and sophomore Emily Nichols for winning the Diamond Entrepreneurial Challenge. The team wrote a five-page business concept and "pitched" their idea -- Raven Eyes, the school photography store -- to the judges. Forty-two teams were in the competition. The team won a total of $9,000 -- each student received a $1,000 scholarship; instructor Frank Makray received $500; and the BFM tech area received the remaining $4,500 to be used for future studies in the program.
Sussex Tech is sending 20 students to the Health Occupations Students of America National Leadership Conference in Orlando, Florida in June. The students qualified for Orlando by placing in the State HOSA competitions. Commendation goes to junior Derek Megee who is very active in the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's on October 12 by advertising it on his late model crate stock car. Derek's participation is in honor of his great-grandfather who died of Alzheimer's disease.
Commendation to seniors Hannah Menendez and Imani Nichols who served on the Sussex County Youth Philanthrophy Board of the Delaware Community Foundation that awarded $10,000 to five Sussex County non-profit organizations. Since September, YPB members have been studying youth issues in their neighborhoods and schools, learning about community service and grantmaking, and conducting site visits.

Students from Sussex Technical High School’s ninth grade class enjoyed the recent 2013 Delaware DigiGirlz Day presented by the Delaware Department of Education and the Delaware Department of Technology and Information at Wilmington University’s Dover campus. The purpose of the program is to address the declining enrollment of young ladies entering the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
The event provides a better understanding of a career in the technology field by engaging young women in lively discussions about technology, dispelling the many myths about a STEM education, and engaging the young women in hands-on “fun” activities. Eighth and ninth grade young women are invited to attend. The American Association of University Women and other organizations found that girls make decisions on whether to embrace science and technology in their late middle school and early high school years.
One of the events at DigiGirlz Day was First Robotics, an intense robotics program that offers students the opportunity to real-world engineering. The Cyber Patriot breakout session dealt with how our lives revolve around the cyber world. It explained to students how to protect themselves online and gave security suggestions for the cyber infrastructure. Attendees also participated in Kodu, a 3-D game development environment designed to teach programming language and create games. The WilmU Gaming program gave students an overview of the basic techniques to hands-on game building.
Delaware U.S. Senator Tom Carper visited with students at DigiGirlz Day. Keynote speaker was Dr. Stephanie Wright, president of the Delaware Aerospace Education Foundation. Dr. Wright talked about her career, including her selection to be a Teacher in Space candidate.

Delaware Superior Court Judge Jane Brady was the guest lecturer in the criminal justice classes at Sussex Tech on May 2 to give a lesson on the Emancipation Proclamation. In observance of its 150th anniversary, Judge Brady explained to the students how the president’s constitutional authority as commander in chief of the armed forces gave President Lincoln the power to proclaim that all those enslaved in Confederate territory to be forever free. Four states – including Delaware –were not named in the Proclamation because even though they were slave-holding states, they were not in rebellion from the United States. She told how the Emancipation Proclamation led to the passage by Congress of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865 to abolish slavery.
The visiting lecture was in celebration of Law Day, sponsored by the Delaware Law Related Education Center, where lawyers are paired up with participating schools to incorporate “law into the classroom.” In cooperation with the American Bar Association, the lesson is prepared for the lawyers. Each year the lawyers choose a topic pertinent to history.
