Several Sussex Technical High School students have been selected to participate in the 2013 Delaware Foundation Reaching Citizens (DFRC) Blue-Gold All-Star Football Game Program. The 58th annual football game will be played at the University of Delaware Stadium on June 22. Chosen to represent Sussex Tech are: Cheerleaders – Ashley Jump, Jessica Lux, and Sarah Timmons; Junior Ambassadors – Jada Burbage and Shelby McBroom; Football Player – Marshall Brown; and Senior Ambassadors – Taylor Hatfield, Stephen Mervine, and Paige Robinson.
All high school participants play a vital role in the success of the DFRC Blue-Gold program and in the DFRC mission to enrich the lives of Delawareans with intellectual disabilities. Since the initial orientation sessions in January, many of the Blue-Gold participants have met their Hand-in-Hand Buddies at a dance party in Dover, and over the weekend of April 14, they went bowling with their Buddies.
The first annual Blue-Gold football game was founded by Bob Carpenter and Jim Williams, two local sports enthusiasts who were the parents of children with intellectual disabilities. While there were nationwide campaigns to collect funds for individuals with physical disabilities, there were no local fundraising campaigns to help people with intellectual disabilities. Since 1956, the football game has raised money to help improve the lives of hundreds of Delaware children with intellectual disabilities. The money is used to support programs that encourage individuals with intellectual disabilities to maximize their potential, independence, and enjoyment of life.

Sussex Technical High School senior Jack Redefer was chosen as a recipient of the 2012 United Cerebral Palsy of Delaware (UCP) and Wilmington Blue Rocks' Victory Scholarship Award. The award recognizes and honors individuals who have overcome obstacles in their lives to participate in sports.
At the Diamond Dinner on Friday, April 20, Christian Zwickert, board member of UCP and head lacrosse coach at Immaculata College, introduced Jack. Zwickert was Jack's club lacrosse coach for three years from the Silverback's Lacrosse Club in Wilmington. Interestingly, Zwickert did not know that Jack was a recipient until that night.
Following graduation, Jack will be attending Misericordia University in Dallas, Pennsylvania, and playing lacrosse for the Cougars. He plans to major in education. Jack had over 60 goals and 45 assists during his lacrosse career at Sussex Tech. Jack was also the quarterback for the Sussex Tech football team. His parents are T.J. and Bobbie Redefer of Lewes.

Sussex Technical High School senior Jack Redefer of Lewes officially signed to play lacrosse at Misericordia University in Dallas, Pennsylvania. The Division III Cougars are members of the Middle Athletic Corporation’s Freedom Conference. Jack is a first team All-Henlopen Conference lacrosse player in the midfield. He has over 60 goals and 45 assists during his lacrosse career at Sussex Tech. He is also a team captain.
When contacted Coach Ricardo predicted that Jack would be playing college lacrosse as a freshman. “He is a relentless player,” said Ricardo, “and that is the kind of attitude we are looking for. We want someone who will give all he has on the field.”
Jack said that although he received letters from other colleges trying to recruit him, Coach Ricardo was the only one to talk to him in person. Ricardo was at Polytech vs. Sussex Tech lacrosse game last fall to watch some Polytech players when he first noticed Jack’s talents. “Coach Ricardo walked across the field, introduced himself, and invited me to come see him at Misericordia,” remembered Jack. Jack will be a teammate of two Polytech lacrosse players who are sophomores on the Cougar team.
Misericordia means “Mercy” in Latin. It is a small Catholic school with approximately 2,000 students. “I think my grandmother would be proud I chose Misericordia. She is a devout Catholic,” said Jack.
At the signing ceremony on January 24, Jack thanked his teachers and coaches at Sussex Tech for helping him to succeed. “They not only pushed me academically, but Coach G (Golacinski, Sussex Tech’s lacrosse coach) kept me on the straight and narrow,” said Jack.
Jack plans to major in education at college. The four-hour drive north on the Pennsylvania Turnpike will make it possible for his family to travel to his college games. He is the son of T.J. and Bobbie Redefer of Lewes. Jack was also the quarterback for the Ravens’ football team.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Saint Joseph’s senior forward Ellen Rowe (Selbyville, Del./Sussex Technical) was named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. Rowe had a hand in four of SJU’s five goals this past weekend, scoring three of them herself and adding an assist.
On Saturday, Rowe netted both Hawk tallies in an eventual 7-2 loss to undefeated Ohio. On both scores, Rowe inserted the ball on a penalty corner and received a quick return pass that she converted into her first and second goals of the season.
The senior captain scored her third goal of the weekend at the end of the first half of Sunday’s 4-3 loss to Towson. Once again, a well-executed penalty corner led to the Delaware native getting the Hawks within one at the break. With time running out in the second half, Rowe inserted another penalty corner that led to Therese Doyle’s second goal of the season and again cut the deficit to one, but the Hawks were unable to get the tying goal in the final seconds.
Her seven points early in the 2011 campaign have already matched her output from last season, and her 16 career goals lead all active players. This is Rowe’s third career weekly award; she received back-to-back A-10 Rookie of the Week honors in October of 2008.
The Hawks are back in action on Sunday, September 11 when they host Penn at Buckley Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.

Members of Sussex Tech’s two-time state field hockey championship team were invited by the Governor’s office to witness the signing of a new law that will disseminate more information on concussions and their effects to junior high and high school coaches, students, and their parents. On August 30, Delaware Governor Jack Markell signed the high school concussion awareness law on the steps of Legislative Hall in Dover. Former Philadelphia Eagles Vince Papale, as well as lawmakers, coaches, student athletes, representatives of the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) and medical community were on hand for the signing.
Under the new law, athletes and their parents will get information on concussions when they sign sports consent forms and coaches will be required to receive training on how to spot possible concussions. The new law also puts into state law the DIAA’s current rule requiring athletes who have sustained a concussion or are believed to have sustained a concussion to receive a medical clearance before they can resume play.

On National High School Athletic Signing Day (November 9), Sussex Technical High School was proud to announce that three of its baseball players signed with Division I colleges. Senior Hunter Absher committed to Virginia Commonwealth University. Senior Shane Marvel will head to Saint Joseph’s University next year, and teammate Jacob Williams will play at the University of Pennsylvania.

Hunter will head to Richmond, Virginia to pitch for Coach Paul Keyes who has led the Rams’ baseball program for 13 years. He chose Virginia Commonwealth University because of its graphic design program.

Shane chose Saint Joseph’s University because Philadelphia is an easy trip for his parents to travel to watch his games. Shane will occupy third base or pitch on the new baseball field that the Hawks plan to have ready for the 2012 season. Coach Fritz Hamburg is in his fourth year guiding the Crimson and Gray. Shane will major in history and hopes one day to return to Sussex County to teach and coach.

Just a few miles away in Philadelphia, teammate Jacob Williams will be attending one of the oldest universities in America. John Cole has coached the Ivy League school’s baseball team for seven years. Although Jacob has not declared an academic major, he plans to be on the pitcher’s mound for Penn.
As of this time, the three schools are not on each other’s competitive schedules, although Shane Marvel laughs that it would be fun to perhaps play against one of his former teammates one day. However, until that day, the three Ravens’ teammates are looking forward to the spring 2012 baseball season. After the signings, Hunter says the three no longer have to worry about their post-graduation future.
“We can now relax and spend our last (high school) year playing with confidence,” says Hunter.
New first year head coach G.L. Jefferson is also anxious for the season to begin. “Not many first year coaches are so fortunate to have the talent I have returning to the field in the spring. A state championship would climax their high school careers for all three of these young athletes.”
