On National High School Athletic Signing Day (November 9), Sussex Technical High School was proud to announce that three of its baseball players signed with Division I colleges. Senior Hunter Absher committed to Virginia Commonwealth University. Senior Shane Marvel will head to Saint Joseph’s University next year, and teammate Jacob Williams will play at the University of Pennsylvania.

Hunter will head to Richmond, Virginia to pitch for Coach Paul Keyes who has led the Rams’ baseball program for 13 years. He chose Virginia Commonwealth University because of its graphic design program.

Shane chose Saint Joseph’s University because Philadelphia is an easy trip for his parents to travel to watch his games. Shane will occupy third base or pitch on the new baseball field that the Hawks plan to have ready for the 2012 season. Coach Fritz Hamburg is in his fourth year guiding the Crimson and Gray. Shane will major in history and hopes one day to return to Sussex County to teach and coach.

Just a few miles away in Philadelphia, teammate Jacob Williams will be attending one of the oldest universities in America. John Cole has coached the Ivy League school’s baseball team for seven years. Although Jacob has not declared an academic major, he plans to be on the pitcher’s mound for Penn.
As of this time, the three schools are not on each other’s competitive schedules, although Shane Marvel laughs that it would be fun to perhaps play against one of his former teammates one day. However, until that day, the three Ravens’ teammates are looking forward to the spring 2012 baseball season. After the signings, Hunter says the three no longer have to worry about their post-graduation future.
“We can now relax and spend our last (high school) year playing with confidence,” says Hunter.
New first year head coach G.L. Jefferson is also anxious for the season to begin. “Not many first year coaches are so fortunate to have the talent I have returning to the field in the spring. A state championship would climax their high school careers for all three of these young athletes.”
