ELLEN ROWE NAMED ATLANTIC 10 FIELD HOCKEY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Senior Captain Tallied Three Goals and an Assist in Two GamesNEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Saint Joseph’s senior forward Ellen Rowe (Selbyville, Del./Sussex Technical) was named the Atlantic 10 Field Hockey Player of the Week on Tuesday afternoon. Rowe had a hand in four of SJU’s five goals this past weekend, scoring three of them herself and adding an assist.

On Saturday, Rowe netted both Hawk tallies in an eventual 7-2 loss to undefeated Ohio. On both scores, Rowe inserted the ball on a penalty corner and received a quick return pass that she converted into her first and second goals of the season.

The senior captain scored her third goal of the weekend at the end of the first half of Sunday’s 4-3 loss to Towson. Once again, a well-executed penalty corner led to the Delaware native getting the Hawks within one at the break. With time running out in the second half, Rowe inserted another penalty corner that led to Therese Doyle’s second goal of the season and again cut the deficit to one, but the Hawks were unable to get the tying goal in the final seconds.

Her seven points early in the 2011 campaign have already matched her output from last season, and her 16 career goals lead all active players. This is Rowe’s third career weekly award; she received back-to-back A-10 Rookie of the Week honors in October of 2008.

The Hawks are back in action on Sunday, September 11 when they host Penn at Buckley Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.

Sussex Tech Hockey Players Witness Law Signing

Governor Markell welcomes Sussex Tech’s hockey players to the ceremony. Left to right are seniors Megan Cannon of Dagsboro, Kayla Krause of Milton, Fran Delrosario of Laurel, and Taylor Quillen of Milton. Behind the girls is their coach, Nancy Tribbitt.

Members of Sussex Tech’s two-time state field hockey championship team were invited by the Governor’s office to witness the signing of a new law that will disseminate more information on concussions and their effects to junior high and high school coaches, students, and their parents. On August 30, Delaware Governor Jack Markell signed the high school concussion awareness law on the steps of Legislative Hall in Dover. Former Philadelphia Eagles Vince Papale, as well as lawmakers, coaches, student athletes, representatives of the Delaware Interscholastic Athletic Association (DIAA) and medical community were on hand for the signing.

Under the new law, athletes and their parents will get information on concussions when they sign sports consent forms and coaches will be required to receive training on how to spot possible concussions. The new law also puts into state law the DIAA’s current rule requiring athletes who have sustained a concussion or are believed to have sustained a concussion to receive a medical clearance before they can resume play.
