High School Diploma Brightens Groves Graduate’s Future

When Charles Williams of Ellendale accepted his high school diploma during the James H. Groves Adult High School graduation ceremonies on August 15, he also accepted his key to a brighter future. Charles has always dreamed of serving in the military, just as his father and grandfather did.

Unfortunately, when he went to enlist, Charles learned that the GED he earned after leaving high school in 2008 was not accepted by the military. Delaware Army National Guard recruiting officer, Sergeant First Class Michael Cook encouraged Charles to contact the Groves Adult High School to obtain his high school diploma.

“Charles scored so well on his ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test. He just needed that high school diploma,” explained SFC Cook.

After over a year’s commitment of attending night classes, studying, and taking tests, Charles finally walked across the stage to accept the piece of parchment paper that would change his life. Charles enlisted as a 94F – Computer/Detection Systems Repairer with the 198th Signal Battalion. Added perks to the enlistment include a $15,000 sign-on bonus, payable throughout the six-year enlistment period. He will also be able to receive the GI Bill to have his higher education paid, and receive over $700 a month living expenses.

“Success stories like Charles’ is why Groves Adult High School exists,” said Principal Terri Corder. “We are never too old to accomplish our dreams, and Groves wants to be part of that success.”
Charles reports for basic training on September 10 at Fort Benning in Columbus, Georgia. From there, he will go to Fort Gordon in Augusta, Georgia for AIT (advanced individual training) in communications.

With high school diploma in hand, Charles now has more confidence. “My goal is to someday attend West Point and be a military officer,” said Charles. “The military can provide a great career and a good future.”
